Lead at the 2023 CANADA Winter Games

TT NORTH No Comments

Every four years the CANADA Winter Games bring the best youth athletes from the country together.

Within our very own Thor, executive director for Table Tennis North. His responsibility as the NSO (National Sport Organization) Lead, was to liaise between the host society and the NSO. Overseeing all elements of the Table Tennis competition at this prestige Multi Sport event. A task that started 18 month prior to the event that was hosted February/March of 2023. Including sourcing equipment, finding officials, making sure all technical events of the competition are in place and overseen.

Thor was definitely grateful for this learning experience. “It was a team effort with hard working people like our tournament manager and the support of the Referee Team and our officials. Amazing support from the host society through obstacles with the set up of the venue and a few hours of scare with results transmissions.”

In continuation, “It was not easy at times. We learned, we listened, we adopted and at the end, the athletes were able to give their best performances and will remember this competition for the rest of their lives. We showed the world that Table Tennis is a fantastic sport, made friends and will do even better at the next Canada Winter Games in four year.”

We know that the participants enjoyed the experience and had a wonderful time. They competed for six days, celebrated their personal victories to gold medals, and showed up and give their best.

Amazing to see our territorial involvement on the national stage and we know that more amazing things are to come. Thank you Thor for your commitment to sport in the Northwest Territories and beyond.

Every Child Matters – 2023 Canada Games

TT NORTH No Comments

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation gives us the opportunity to recognize and commemorate the intergenerational harm that residential schools have caused to indigenous families and communities. It aims to honour those who have been affected by this injustice, celebrate resilience and affirm a commitment that every child matters.

Team NT Table Tennis will be wearing the “Every Child Matters” logo on their field of play uniform at the 2023 Arctic Winter Games & 2023 Canada Winter Games. They will use edge tape in orange on their paddles and hand out “Every Child Matters” pins. If you see any of our participants feel free to reach out to them, ask for a pin, learn more about Truth & Reconciliation.

Table Tennis North wants to show and highlight the belief that all children are important, including the ones left behind from residential schools and those adults and families who are still healing from the trauma they endured there. “We want to make sure that our Team NT Table Tennis participants know the importance of the movement and don’t shy away from speaking about it. They are role models, they represent the Territory and they will do amazing on and off the table.” – Thorsten Gohl, Executive Director Table Tennis North

Every 30th of September we will wear orange to remember, to reflect and to celebrate resilience. Join us!!!

We Stand Tall

TT NORTH No Comments

The creation of the song ‘We Stand Tall’ came from the inspiration of the perseverance, hard work, and team support of Hockey and Table Tennis athletes. We stand together for “We Stand Tall” and share the song throughout the upcoming Canada Winter Games.

Song was created by Jaycee Leon

Lyrics

That icy chill is rolling in
The Dehcho River’s running deep
And we blazed the trail that we’re walkin’
It’s time to meet our destiny

Scaling over the Mackenzie Mountains
The Northern Lights guide the way
Win or lose, we’re all champions
Nobody’s gonna put out our flame

‘Cause we stand tall
Breaking down every wall
Yeah, we stand tall
NWT through it all
We stand tall
Reach out and take your chance
Hold your Territory’s pride within your hands
And stand up tall

Just look at how far we’ve come
Left all our doubts in the past
We’ve worked hard, but still had fun
Gotta make every moment last

Each second is ours for the taking
Each challenge an new open door
Can you feel the Arctic shaking?
It’s us waiting to see what’s in store

As we stand tall
Breaking down every wall
Yeah, we stand tall
NWT through it all
We stand tall
Reach out and take your chance
Hold your Territory’s pride within your hands
And stand up tall
Stand up tall

You heard the call, you dove right in
The Arctic Ocean guided you here
So trust yourselves and look within
You’ll see the way is crystal clear

As we all now come together
Build each other up every day
The only way is up, it only gets better
So let’s rise to the trials that we face

As we stand tall
Breaking down every wall
Yeah, we stand tall
NWT through it all
We stand tall
Reach out and take your chance
Hold your Territory’s pride within your hands
And stand up tall
Stand up tall
