Third Aerobic Table Tennis Instructor Workshop

Table Tennis North is excited to announce our third Aerobic Table Tennis Instructor workshop, set to take place on January 5, 2025, from 10 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 3 PM. Following the success of our previous two sessions, we are eager to bring coaches from all over Canada together for this enriching course.

This training is open to all Table Tennis coaches, athletes, and officials, as well as anyone interested in learning more about Table Tennis and discovering a fun way to engage with participants. Participants will earn professional development points towards their coaching certification with the National Coach Certification Program, recognized by the Coaching Association of Canada.

The workshop will be facilitated by renowned Aerobic Table Tennis Instructors Ivy Liao and Joyce Xu, both of whom have extensive experience on the national circuit. They will be supported by Steve Rowe, the founder of Aerobic Table Tennis, ensuring that participants receive top-notch guidance throughout the course.

The workshop will cover essential skills, including:

  • Planning and delivering basic Aerobic Table Tennis coaching sessions
  • An introduction to Aerobic Table Tennis
  • Practical aerobic table tennis workouts
  • Engaging fun games
  • Table Tennis practical sessions
  • Basic technical skills, including stroke technique and footwork
  • An introduction to session planning
  • A recap and evaluation of the training

The total duration of the workshop is 4 hours, with some additional hours of external delivery required and internal assessment to follow.

Exciting Season Ahead for Coach Neilson thanks to ISCNWT

What a great season we have had so far as we prepare Coach Neilson for the 2027 Canada Winter Games and the 2028 Arctic Winter Games! The journey has been nothing short of remarkable, and we are thrilled to highlight the incredible support from the Indigenous Sport Circle NWT, which has been an amazing partner in this endeavor.

Thanks to the Indigenous Sport Circle, Coach Neilson has been provided with invaluable opportunities to participate and facilitate in outreach clinics across the North Slave, South Slave, and Beaufort Delta regions. Their support has covered his travel expenses and enabled him to coach Team NT at the Canadian Championships, ensuring he has everything he needs to succeed. Without partners like the Indigenous Sport Circle, this journey would not be possible. We are grateful for their commitment to fostering talent and supporting our athletes.

Looking ahead, Coach Neilson will be focusing on completing his Introduction to Competition courses, which include both sport-specific training for Table Tennis and the multi-sport components required for certification. These courses are set to take place in 2025. Additionally, we are excited to bring Neilson to more outreach clinics, training camps, and the Canadian National Championships in July 2025.

Empowering Coaches: Sport North’s Coach Development Grant

In the ever-evolving world of sports, continuous learning and development are crucial for coaches who aspire to lead their teams to success. Recognizing this need, Sport North has introduced the Coach Development Grant, a remarkable initiative aimed at supporting coaches in the Northwest Territories (NWT) by providing them with opportunities for professional growth and skill enhancement.

Sport North’s Coach Development Grant is designed to empower NWT coaches by facilitating their participation in customized professional development and education opportunities. This initiative underscores Sport North’s commitment to fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement within the coaching community.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the grant, coaches must meet several criteria, ensuring that the support is directed towards those who are dedicated to their professional development:

  • Residency in the NWT and good standing with their Territorial Sport Organization (TSO).
  • Endorsement by their TSO and a demonstrated commitment to coach education through the NCCP Pathway.
  • Completion of the Make Ethical Decisions Course and Evaluation, as well as the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) online Safe Sport Training.
  • A minimum of one year of coaching experience in the NWT.

Grant Details

The grant offers a matching fund of up to $1,000, available once every two years. Coaches are encouraged to seek additional financial support from their local clubs, TSOs, personal investments, or other grants. The application process requires detailed information about the event, learning objectives, budget, and plans for sharing acquired knowledge with other coaches in the NWT.

Eligible and Ineligible Expenses

The grant covers essential expenses such as registration fees, accommodation costs, and travel expenses. However, it does not cover equipment, lost wages, or per diems. This focus ensures that the funds are used directly for educational purposes.

Application Process

Coaches interested in applying must submit their applications at least 30 days before the event. The application must include a letter from the TSO, a detailed budget, and proof of matching funds. Successful applicants are required to submit a follow-up report within 30 days after the event, detailing the learning outcomes and a financial report.

The highlight of the event was the opportunity to engage with the innovative Ford Mustang Mach-E, a vehicle that embodies the same energy and enthusiasm that our athletes bring to the table.

Fort Providence, NT – In a groundbreaking move for the local sports community, Table Tennis North is set to join Minor League Table Tennis (MiLTT) in Spring 2025. This partnership marks a significant milestone in the development of Table Tennis in the region, with a schedule that promises to engage players and fans alike.

The inaugural season will feature eight exciting dates, showcasing the talent and competitive spirit of at least two participating clubs. The confirmed schedule is as follows:

January 11 – Exhibition Game (6-8pm)
February 1 – MiLTT Match #1 Yellowknife (4-6pm)
February 2 – MiLTT Match #2 Yellowknife (4-6pm)
February 15 – MiLTT Match #3 Fort Providence (4-6pm)
February 16 – MiLTT Match #4 Fort Providence (4-6pm)
February 22 – MiLTT Match #5 Yellowknife (4-6pm)
February 23 – MiLTT Match #6 Yellowknife (4-6pm)

Summer Behling, Program Manager with MLTT, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to announce our collaboration with Table Tennis North. This partnership not only strengthens the sport within local communities but also inspires the next generation of Table Tennis athletes. We can’t wait to see the incredible growth and opportunities that lie ahead!”

Thorsten Gohl, Executive Director for Table Tennis North, echoed this sentiment, noting that this collaboration is a significant stepping stone as the organization celebrates its 10-year anniversary in the Northwest Territories. “It will be the next level up, seeing our clubs compete against each other, building capacity with our coaches and officials, and fostering strong relationships with MLTT,” he said.

The league will feature an open division, ensuring a professional environment with top-notch equipment and live streaming for all matches. Each team will consist of four players, with the option to include two reserve players, also known as free agents. In addition to the league matches, Table Tennis North will host a showcase event during the 2025 NWT School Table Tennis Championships, aimed at promoting the sport among youth in the Territory. This initiative is expected to inspire young athletes and cultivate a love for Table Tennis in the community.

Running from January to May, this program is designed to foster connections, enhance professional development, and build confidence among young female athletes.

The Inspire Mentorship Program offers a unique opportunity for participants to engage in mentorship sessions, where they will receive guidance and support from experienced mentors in the sports community. In addition to mentorship, participants will have the chance to volunteer, gaining valuable experience and contributing to their communities.

Exciting New Virtual Aerobic Table Tennis Sessions to Launch November 9th

Get ready to bring energy, fitness, and fun to your home! We are thrilled to announce the launch of our virtual aerobic table tennis sessions, starting November 9th at 10:00 a.m. Mountain Time. Each session will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes, providing a unique blend of fitness and table tennis moves that you can enjoy from anywhere.

These interactive sessions, limited to 10 participants per class, will be prioritized for Team NT, NU, YT, and Nunavik members. However, we’re eager to include other participants if spots are available!

Our sessions will be led by Ivy Liao, a national team athlete, and Joyce Xu, a former national team player, both highly trained in aerobic table tennis instruction. With their high-performance training and experience from international competitions, they’ll lead you through table tennis-specific exercises set to upbeat music. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in baseline testing to track your progress over time.
