The sound of paddles and cheers echoed through the new Territorial Training Centre in Fort Providence as the community came together for the 2025 Fort Providence Table Tennis Club Championships. With youth and adults alike stepping up to the table, it was a day filled with excitement, skill, and sportsmanship.

The event featured three divisions: Youth Singles, Open Doubles, and Open Singles. Showcasing both the growing talent in the community and the strength of the Table Tennis Family in the North.

More than just competition, the championships were a celebration of community, growth, and opportunity, made possible by the new Territorial Training Centre and the continued support of partners like Sport North.

From newcomers to experienced players, every participant contributed to an atmosphere of encouragement and inclusion. Events like this are vital for empowering Northern youth, building confidence, and creating memories that stretch far beyond the table.

Congratulations to all players, and a heartfelt thank you to the volunteers, coaches, and supporters who made this day possible.

Due to low entry, the Territorial Championships will be postponed until the end of Summer or early Fall.

It all comes down to this. The Territorial Table Tennis Championships are set to take place on Saturday, June 21st, 2025 at the Territorial Training Centre in Fort Providence, and it’s time to crown the best in the North!

Athletes from across the Northwest Territories will gather to compete for the ultimate title in a day filled with passion, precision, and pride. Whether you’re a youth player chasing your first medal or a returning competitor ready for a rematch, this is your moment.

Another year, another thrilling edition of the NWT School Table Tennis Championships! Hosted at Weledeh School, this year’s event was a resounding success, showcasing incredible talent and sportsmanship among the young athletes. The atmosphere was electric, filled with smiles, high-fives, and super rallies that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.

The competition was fierce, but the camaraderie among participants was even stronger. Athletes from various schools came together to compete in both doubles and singles events, culminating in a vibrant celebration of skill and teamwork. At the end of the day, medals were awarded for outstanding performances, and three banners were presented to the top schools.

After a seven-year hiatus, the 2024 NWT Territorial Championships marked a triumphant return, showcasing the talent and dedication of Table Tennis athletes. Hosted at the Territorial Training Centre in Fort Providence, the championships brought together players in the Youth Singles, Open Singles, and Open Doubles divisions for a thrilling display of skill and sportsmanship.

This year’s championships, the third edition since the inception of Table Tennis North, provided a platform for athletes to challenge themselves and vie for the prestigious title of Territorial Champions. The competition was fierce, with participants giving their all to claim victory and etch their names in the annals of NWT Table Tennis history.

The 2023/24 NWT School Table Tennis Championships was a remarkable event that saw the participation of 8 schools, with over 120 youth enthusiastically competing.

The Executive Director, Thorsten Gohl, who has had roles in the Olympic Games, world championships, and Canadian championships, expressed his admiration for the NWT School Championships, describing it as “Organized chaos. Students cheer on their classmates next to the tables. High fiving during the rally. Just so beautiful.”

It was particularly heartening to see Fort Good Hope participating for the first time. A special acknowledgment goes to Michel Allard for his commendable support to the youth in the Sahtu Community.

The results of the championships were impressive, reflecting the hard work and dedication of all the participants.

As we look forward to what 2024 brings, we are hopeful that more athletes will participate, further enhancing the spirit of camaraderie and competition that makes the NWT School Table Tennis Championships such a unique and cherished event.

It’s the last territorial champion-ship of the calendar year and was one which provided the most unlikely of results.

The NWT Table Tennis Championships were held at Weledeh and St. Pat’s Gymnasiums on Dec. 15 and 16 and Zachary Mathison of Weledeh Catholic School made sure people knew it doesn’t matter how old you are, but rather that you can play the game. And he did just that, winning the Grade 8 boys singles title. Not a big deal until you realize that Mathison is only in Grade 3. Mathison said it was a challenge, but nothing he couldn’t handle. “I wasn’t really nervous,” he said. “The kids were just bigger, that’s all.” They were a bit bigger this time because the eight-year-old won the Grade 6 boys title last year as a Grade 2 student, but thought he could pull it off again this year. “I had some easy matches, some hard matches,” he said.

Just for a challenge, Mathison decided to enter the high school event to play doubles with his older brother, Christopher, who goes to St. Pat’s, and they won that. “The doubles was a bit harder,” said the younger Mathison. “They hit a bit harder but I wasn’t nervous at all.”

Christopher Mathison went on to win the Grade 9-12 boys singles in the high school division to complete the family sweep, which helped St. Pat’s win the overall banner in that category. While Mathison was busy dom-inating Grade 8 students as an eight-year-old, there were other divisions up for grabs.

St. Joe’s ended up winning the overall championship in the junior division thanks in large part to Alex Ramsey, Raine Mingo and Gracie Brennan winning the Grade 6 boys and girls and Grade 7 girls singles titles respectively. Mingo and Ramsey teamed up to capture the Grade 6 doubles title, which helped the school lock up the banner in their first year competing as a team. The overall banners were decided based on an aggregate system where the total number of points earned by a school through its results was divided by the number of athletes a school brought to produce an average score.

Cory Taylor was the school’s coach and said it was a pretty good debut for the Huskies. “Eugene (Roach, phys-ed teacher) and I ran table tennis as part of the after-school program and we used that as our practice,” he said. “We had some kids picking up racquets for the first time and some who obviously knew what they were doing and so they were challenging Eugene and I for matches.”

Table Tennis December Poster

Deh Gah School in Fort Providence hosted the 2017 Territorial Table Tennis Championships. A two day event featuring different age groups, singles and double events from January 27th to 28th.

“This was an amazing event, a huge success! We are a very young Territorial Sports Organization still and competing with sports like Hockey, Volleyball, Soccer and Basketball in the Northwest Territories. BUT, we are getting out there, one day at a time and one kid at a time. Really, this was amazing!!!” says Executive Director Thor Gohl. He continous with a smile on his face “Even when there was no matches to be played or umpired, the kids found a free table to play. That says it all!!”

The tournament is definitely growing. From three Regions and four communities, to four regions and seven communities. Participants came from Yellowknife, N’Dilo, Fort Resolution, Hay River, Fort Providence, Fort Simpson and Tulita. We also split the School Championships from the Open Championships, so we have two tournaments a year in two different communities.  

A huge thank you to all our sponsors and partners, without you, this would not be possible. Therefore, a big MAHSI CHO to the Mackenzie Recreation Association, Aerobic Table Tennis, Rowe’s Group of Companies, Butterfly North America and Deh Gah School. 

All awards received a Mackenzie Recreation Association package with  backpack, hat, and t-shirt. They also received t-shirts from Olympic Team Canada and professional Table Tennis rackets from Steve Rowe’s Aerobic Table Tennis.

Zack Horton (Hay River) received the Fair Play award for his amazing attitude. Winning or not winning he was always cheerful. When someone else made an amazing point, he would cheer for them and tell others about it. When there was a free table he would want to play with all different players. Very great to have that kind of energy around.

David Sangris (N’Dilo) received the Most Improved Player award with winning a Silver Medal in the Cadet Boys category and a Gold Medal in the Open Doubles. We have seen much improvement, just during the tournament. He is a dedicated player, coming with the school to Table Tennis clinics and tournaments.

Starr MacLean (Fort Resolution) received the Most Improved Player award and bronze in Cadet Girls category. We were in Fort Resolution recently and we can see fast improvement. When she was not playing in the competition, she was looking for others to play with.

The 2017 Territorial Championships will be hosted from January 27-29th 2017 at Deh Gah School in Fort Providence.
